2015 Secret SantaThe Monaca Volunteer Fire Department is launching their second annual Secret Santa Adopt-A-Family this week. This program is entirely anonymous, in which the only person to be aware of the family’s selection is the person who nominated them.  The fire department then works directly with that point of contact to coordinate what the family needs.  Last year, the department planned to adopt one family, but due to the influx of donations from the community, were able to adopt two families.  This year the department hopes to be able to increase this number depending on donations received in addition to what the department and it’s members contribute themselves.

Monaca Station 57 (Monaca #4) started the program last year as a thank you to everyone in the community for the amount of support they received throughout the year and wanted to give back to the community that had given so much to them.  When sister station Monaca Station 58 (Monaca #5) became aware of the initiative they quickly provided unsolicited support of the program as well.  The two departments worked together to select the families, wrap the presents, and deliver them to the families.  A unique aspect of this Secret Santa is that the departments are not looking for any type of thank you’s from the families selected.

Mike Siegel, Assistant Chief of Monaca #4, explained “Last year we were as quiet as possible when delivering the gifts and food.  We placed them on the front porches and drove our vehicles away.  Once we were far enough away that the families couldn’t see us, we sent someone to knock on the door and run away before being seen.”

Joe Bittner, Chief of Monaca #4, added “The elation of the kids finding a pile of presents on their porch is the most gratifying thing of the holidays for our department.”

I’m involved with Secret Santa because that’s what the Christmas season is suppose to be about, a season of giving.  I believe everyone should be able to enjoy their holidays.”
